HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) - There could be some relief to the traffic tie-ups that have been happening while crews work to inspect the 31st Street bridge in Huntington.

The bridge connects Huntington, West Virginia, and Proctorville, Ohio, and the West Virginia Department of Highways says they've adjusted the timing on the traffic lights. The green light time has now been extended by 20 seconds in each direction.

Drivers have said this needed to be done after massive delays this week during the inspection.

On Monday, the WVDOH announced that one lane of the two-lane bridge would be closed during the inspection, but would be reopened for Marshall home games.

According to WVDOH bridge and tunnel program manager Ed Armbruster, P.E., the WVDOH and contractors are working during the day, seven days a week, in order to complete the inspection with in four weeks. He says closing the bridge only during the night would have taken them around four months to complete the inspection.
